About PFLAG – Westminster

Westiminster-Pride-PFLAG-WestminsterPFLAG Westminster (Carroll County Maryland) is a chapter of PFLAG: a national non-profit organization made up of parents, families, friends, and allies uniting with people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ). PFLAG is committed to advancing equality through its mission of support, education and advocacy. PFLAG has more than 350 chapters and 200,000 members and supporters crossing multiple generations of American families in major urban centers, small cities, and rural areas in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.

Westminster-2011-Fallfest-5The mission of PFLAG Westminster-Carroll County is to welcome all people, gay, straight, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning and their families, friends, and allies. Together, they support each other, educate the broader community about the LGBTQ+ community, and advocate equality and empowerment for LGBTQ+ persons.

A PFLAG presence has been in Westminster since 2002 and they have supported and/or led the Westminster Maryland LGBTQ+ community – and their sincere allies – for the past 16 years! The current chapter came into being in 2010, and they have been active participants of Frederick Pride, Baltimore Pride, and DC Pride events; and they have made our Westminster LGBTQ+ presence known during the Westminster Fall Fests.

PFLAG-Westminster regularly creates and host events such as Valentine’s Day dances, Thanksgiving potluck dinners, Transgender Day of Remembrance services, community picnics, and LGBTQ-themed movie nights. They have been LGBTQ leaders in the Westminster Maryland community by creating and/or promoting various educational events including those that focused on marriage equality, transgender rights, straight privilege, white privilege, cisgender privilege, LGBTQ rights in our schools, LGBTQ rights in our faith communities, LGBTQ education for straight allies, Queer History, and LGBTQ Pride.

They partner with Westminster’s only ONA church, St. Paul’s, on the First Fridays program (http://www.firstfridaystpauls.org/), and they partner with the public library and the school system to engage in booktalk programs with high school LGBTQ+ clubs. They have hosted an “I Am Jazz” reading, and they have donated books to the high school media centers. PFLAG-Westminster has assisted with scholarships for LGBTQ students, they took part in a vigil after the Orlando tragedy, and they were part of the Marriage Equality Light Brigade. They are part of the “LGBT Safe Spaces in Maryland” by the Pride Foundation of Maryland (https://www.pridemd.org/safespace) and are one of four safe spaces in Westminster.

PFLAG meets regularly on the 3rd Sunday of each month from 5 to 7 PM (with the exception of the months of June, July & August) at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ.
